1. As we watch progress through the film, "The Hurt Locker", how is the idea of realism being used for this movie? What kind of effects do you think this has on viewers?
The ideas behind this movie are very real actually in terms of how accurately portrayed the movie is. Some of the stuff is very real the dangers of insurgents being there to take care of the bomb squad just with the click of a button or a phone call is the difference between any bomb squad getting home to the barracks safe, or them being completely blow away by the very bomb they try diffusing. This realistic sense that the main character could be blown up at anytime is what really adds to the impact of this movie, and of course there is the basic tuning of the story line to add to the effect of the movie which is regular, but the full effect of the movie is still there as the story goes on and they try to diffuse more and more bombs.

2. What do you think your biggest take away is from this class? What would be a suggestion to make the class better for next year?
I personally believe the biggest take away from the class would be that: even though Hollywood may say that it is based on a true story. You can always count on the fact that there will be somewhat of a twist to the story to make more appealing to the audience. Knowing this you can deduct what you know is actual history, and what part is fictional work of Hollywood. Knowing this you are able to ask your self questions about the movie, which in my mind ruins the effect because I then cannot concentrate on the movie. Not being able to concentrate on the movie is a huge bother for me, because I like to get into the movie I am watching so I can feel the full effect of it.

  1. I agree with what you said in the first question. The suspense of this movie was crazy and it definitely added to the film as a whole. You also made some very good points in the second question. Hollywood isn't always truthful in their portrayal of movies and that is something that I think we all realized in this class.

  2. The way you talked about how Hollywood puts a twist on everything, although they say it's based on a true story, is the one thing I also got out of this class. Like you, I aswell tend to get bored of a movie if there is no type of twist to it , like Hollywood does so good. I think we are trained to keep wanting to be more and more entertained by Hollywood as at some point, every movie will be so far off the subject and not true that it won't even serve a purpose and a historical film.

  3. Dylan, I think the fact that Hollywood tries to make movies more appealing to the audience rather than having the true story is a big take away from this class. I also like to get into the movie and after taking this class, it is hard to focus on the main story line rather than depicting out things.

  4. I like how you say Hollywood puts a twist onto a story and makes it into a movie. Because, that is completely true, we learned that when we watched Argo. This movie makes you feel as if you were with the bomb squad so I think this one doesn't have much of a twist on the story.

  5. Dylan, you make a very good point about Hollywood putting a twist on "true" stories. We, as humans, have a need for excitement so Hollywood catches that interest. I, too, like being able to watch interesting movies and if it is boring, I will never finish watching it. Very good blog, Dylan.

  6. Great Blog! I liked how you talked about how fast things change and how little things can mean life or death. Something just as small as a cell phone or something can trigger a bomb that takes someone's life. I also thought that this movie was really real. I like how you talked about just because it is a Hollywood movie that doesn't mean that it is accurate. This class really pointed out how Hollywood changes things. I also watch movies differently now.

  7. Dylan, I also think that when viewing movies it is a downer want the movie is said to be a true story, and it turns out it not. It really bugs me when you find out things like that. I still love movies, and the stories that they crate should say it is loosely based on a true story. Either way the stories they crate make for good entertainment.

  8. I agree with what you are saying about how the effects that Hollywood uses may actually hurt them instead of helping them. I am a big believer that less is more. I also like how you point out the realism of the movie, "The Hurt Locker." I think that is what made the movie the work of generous that it was. I also agree with how you say this way of filming really gives the viewer the first hand view of everything these soldiers in Iraq and bomb squads faced.

  9. You are my lost blog I am commenting on and, like my own blog, I have noticed we have all discussed how the movie accurately portrays the life of the soldiers in the war but how do we know? We have not been there to witness such events. I agree that sometimes I too find my self concentrating on other aspects of the film and not what the Hollywood filmmakers want us to see.
